Kale can be purple, green, or even have tinges of reddish pinks. The leaves can be frilly, lobed, or fairly flat. Kale is full of great nutrients, and can be eaten cooked or raw. The leaves are often described as mildly sweet.

WHAT IS A BRASSICA YOU ASK? Brassicas are members of the Brassicaceae family, otherwise known as Cruciferae. They are also in the genus of the mustard family. Brassicas are sometimes called cole crops or cold crops as I call them, since they are usually the first plants put out in the spring. The plants include all of the plants you see on this page, as well as, turnips, rutabagas, mustards, bok choy, and many more! Feel free to click on the terms for more information on Brassicas and Cruciferous. And a big THANKS to Wikipedia for sharing!

Collards - This variety is new to my growing list this year. It is an heirloom variety known for not having any purple tones.

Yummy, dark green and purple brussel sprouts all along the stalk. These varieties produce sweet tasting sprouts. I know good and brussel sprouts is not normally in the same sentence. However, after the first frost, I assure you they make some sweet greens!
